Texas National Guard expects to be activated ahead of election

The Texas National Guard expects up to a thousand troops to be activated and work in the state's largest cities leading up to and immediately following the election.

Major General Tracy Norris says the Guard will work with the Department of Public Safety to guard "historical landmarks such as the Alamo and the State Capitol."

"To be clear, there has been no request nor plan to provide any type of support at any polling location in Texas," she wrote on Twitter.

Members of the Texas National Guard will be sent to Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins says the Guard will work with local law enforcement.

"We have no credible threat of unrest," he says. "The governor did not alert any of us he was sending the Guard here, but I'll visit with the Guard. I'm sure the police chief in Dallas and sheriff will as well."

Jenkins says law enforcement "constantly plan and train for all sorts of eventualities." He says there have been no more credible threats than after previous elections.

"We will count the votes. We will name a winner," Jenkins says. "America prides itself, and we pride ourselves, on a peaceful transition of power, and that's what will happen here."
