Texas shoppers can save on qualifying back-to-school items this weekend during the state’s annual sales tax holiday.

According to the Texas Comptroller’s office, the tax-free period runs from Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9. During those three days, most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 each can be purchased without state or local sales tax.

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines announced that families are expected to save an estimated $142.5 million statewide this year. The exemption applies to purchases made in stores, online, by phone or by mail from sellers doing business in Texas. Shoppers generally do not need an exemption certificate.

Qualifying items include everyday clothing and shoes, student backpacks, and common school supplies such as notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, calculators, folders and lunch boxes, provided each item costs less than $100. Specialty athletic gear, accessories like jewelry or handbags, and items priced at $100 or more do not qualify. Shipping charges count toward the $100 limit.

The Comptroller’s office encourages shoppers to review the full list of eligible items on its website before heading out. Layaway purchases finalized during the weekend can also qualify if the individual item price stays under the limit.
