Projects in Texas will receive a total of $43.5 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve and modernize railroads. The Federal Railroad Administration announced funding for a total of 122 projects across the country.
"Today’s [Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements] grants will enhance rail safety, better connect towns, cities, and ports, introduce more environmentally friendly locomotives, support the current rail workforce, and provide workforce development opportunities essential to the future of our industry and the national economy," Administrator Amit Bose wrote in a statement.
In Texas, $16.7 million will go to Dallas, Garland, and Northeastern Railroad to improve and replace rail, resurface, and install rail lubricators between Sherman and McKinney. The railroad will contribute 30% of the cost, and FRA says the work will reduce the risk of derailment while increasing speeds on the line.
Texas & Eastern Railroad will receive $13.3 million to "rehabilitate deteriorating rail infrastructure" along 28 miles of track and at 17 crossings between Palestine and Rusk. Jaguar Transport, which owns the railroad, will contribute 31% of the cost.
Rio Valley Switching Company will receive $5.2 million to improve and expand yards around Hidalgo in South Texas. Texas Gonzales Northern Rail will receive $4.6 million to replace seven deck timber pile bridges. Texas Rock Crusher Railway will receive $3.5 million to repair 2.5 miles of track and replace a bridge in Brownwood, about 50 miles southeast of Abilene.
