The violence is a half a world away. But so many North Texans are feeling it.
David Auren is Israeli. He's lived here in DFW since 2017. David spoke with KRLD's John Liddle about what the last week has been like for him.
Auren shed light on his initial shock, concerns for his family and friends, and his frustration with the lack of condemnation for the terror attacks carried out by Hamas.
"I couldn't believe that something like this can happen over there in this day and age. I couldn't believe that this kind of horrific act could happen. It's just unthinkable," Auren said.
From the moment the conflict began, Auren has been glued to the screens and media outlets, constantly seeking updates and trying to ensure the safety of his loved ones.
He recalled the shock of witnessing the initial barrage of rockets and the subsequent infiltration by Hamas fighters.
With his entire family residing in Israel and friends serving on the front lines, Auren's concern for their safety was paramount. While his immediate family was physically unharmed, many friends living in the region near Gaza remain in his thoughts as he anxiously awaits any news.
As someone intimately familiar with the tactics employed by terror organizations, Auren voiced his disbelief at the failure of defense systems to prevent the attacks.
"This is not a matter of how do we defend ourselves, but how do you eliminate that terror? This is the real issue. This is the real world," Auren said.
Auren also addressed the impact of the conflict on the North Texas community, particularly within religious and social spheres.
For Auren, he emphasized that the war in Israel is not a war against religion or the Palestinian people, but rather a war against clear acts of terror. He urged people to speak out against these attacks and condemn organizations promoting violence.
"If you are not standing against torturing and killing people in their home, in their sleep, for just being Jews and you don't strongly condemn that, I think that you should really take a deep look into your moral compass and your human values," Auren says.
