Juneteenth with Black Composers

Featuring soprano Alfrelynn Roberts, renowned as much for her choral and operatic repertoire, as for her moving interpretation of spirituals.
Join us in exploring a range of musical styles in our fourth annual presentation of works by Black composers, which include the renowned 18th c. Frenchman Joseph Bologne with his elegant "Symphony No 1" and the mid- 20th C composer Florence Price with an orchestral version of her "String Quartet No 1". Extraordinary in his use of themes from African American folk music, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's talent is displayed in the high-energy final movement "Danse Negre" from a larger work "African Suite".
Ms. Roberts performs Gospel Style spirituals by Robert L. Morris, and the famous "Peter go ring dem bells" and others by John Carter. Exploring deeper in the vocal repertoire, she brings us "Soon One Morn" by the Take 6 gospel/jazz composer Cedric Dent.
