Several train cars derailed while moving through Roanoke Tuesday morning, shutting down crossings in the city. The Roanoke Fire Department says the train derailed before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The city says the locomotive and three cars carrying coal derailed on the tracks that run along Highway 377.

The derailment closed part of southbound 377 and crossings at Denton Drive, Benson Lane and Henrietta Creek Road.

Roanoke Fire says no one was hurt, and the city is working with the railroad to clear derailed cars. The train cars stayed upright, and Roanoke Fire says the derailment occurred between Byron Nelson Boulevard and Denton Drive.

Highways 114 and 170 are grade-separated from the railroad tracks, so they stayed open.

The three crossings reopened before 9 a.m. when Roanoke Fire says the rest of the train was detached and moved. Highway 377 reopened before 9:30 when heavy equipment was moved out of the way. Roanoke Fire said the equipment ensured train cars would stay upright enough to prevent coal from spilling and to prevent any fuel leaks.
