State transportation leaders will gather in Irving on Wednesday for the annual infrastructure summit to address the logistical challenges driven by North Texas’ surging population.
Officials emphasize that North Texas remains one of the fastest-growing regions in the state. However, Texas Department of Transportation official Brian Barth warned that despite Texas securing more transportation funding than any other state, the available capital may still fall short of keeping pace with the area's explosive expansion.
Barth noted that transportation infrastructure is increasingly competing with other critical state needs for funding. State priorities have recently shifted toward energy grid reliability, water infrastructure, and the massive power demands of expanding data centers, pushing traditional transit and highway expansion lower on the priority list.
To secure future funding and scale projects effectively, local and state leaders must align their goals before the upcoming Texas legislative session convenes in January, Barth said.
