A judge in Collin County has set a trial date for Karmelo Anthony, 18, who is charged with murder in connection with the deadly stabbing at a Frisco ISD track meet in April.

Anthony's trial is scheduled to begin June 1, 2026, in Collin County's 296th District Court.

Police said Anthony stabbed and killed 17-year-old Frisco Memorial High School student Austin Metcalf during a track meet at Frisco's Kuykendall Stadium on April 2. Anthony was 17 and a student at Centennial High School.

The two got into an argument during the track meet. Anthony's lawyer says the teen was acting in self-defense, police said.

"We believe in the legal process, and that is when the truth will come out," Anthony's mother, Kayla Hayes, told reporters a couple weeks after the stabbing. "To the family who experienced the loss, my heart truly goes out to you."

A grand jury indicted Anthony for murder in June.

"I am pleased that we are moving forward. With the first-degree murder indictment, it now goes into the court system. I fully believe that justice will be served for Austin Metcalf. I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back," Metcalf's father, Jeff, wrote in a statement after the indictment.

Anthony was released from jail April 14 after a judge lowered his bond from $1 million to $250,000. He was required to wear an ankle monitor and has been on house arrest.
