President Donald Trump and Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico held competing rallies in Lubbock on Tuesday, just days before the midterm elections, as both sides make a final push in the tight race for the U.S. Senate seat.
Trump appeared at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center to support Republican nominee Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general. Talarico, a state representative, spoke a few miles away at the Fiesta Center. The events came as early voting continues and Election Day approaches next week. Paxton is seeking the seat being vacated by longtime Sen. John Cornyn, whom he defeated in the Republican primary.
According to the Texas Tribune, thousands gathered at both locations in the Republican-leaning West Texas city. Talarico’s campaign said more than 4,000 people registered for his event, with some attendees standing outside because the venue reached capacity. Trump’s rally was his second stop of the day in Texas after an earlier appearance in Corpus Christi. He urged supporters to back Republicans on the ballot, including Paxton.
Talarico has held a narrow lead in several recent public polls. His campaign has focused on appealing to independent and some Republican voters in conservative areas while building margins in urban centers. Republicans are emphasizing turnout in strongholds like Lubbock County, where Trump won by a wide margin in 2024.
