Two 18-year-olds are dead and a 20-year-old is wounded after a shooting early Wednesday in Mesquite that police say began with an argument over an infant’s first haircut.
Mesquite police officers responded around 12:07 a.m. to a reported shooting in the 2200 block of Amber Springs Drive. Earlier reports placed the incident on Clearwater Drive, but investigators determined the shooting occurred on Amber Springs. Officers found two men in the roadway with gunshot wounds, began lifesaving efforts including CPR, and transported both to Baylor University Medical Center, where they later died. Both were 18-year-old Mesquite residents. Their identities have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
A 20-year-old man arrived separately at a local emergency room with gunshot wounds that police described as non-life-threatening. Investigators believe he was involved in the same incident and is being transferred to a Dallas-area hospital for further treatment.
Mesquite Police Lt. Michael Kelly told FOX 4 the shooting followed a family argument over a child’s haircut that escalated into a physical fight in which guns were drawn. Officials said multiple family members were involved, including siblings, in-laws, family friends and a godparent. The two teens who died were close but not related by blood, and neither was the father of the child whose haircut was at the center of the dispute.
No arrests have been made. Kelly said the investigation remains active and early, and investigators are working to determine who fired and whether charges are warranted. The Mesquite Police Department has not released additional details on the number of firearms involved or the full sequence of events.
