Two bicyclists are dead after being struck by a vehicle Saturday morning while riding with the Frisco Triathlon Club on a rural road in Denton County.
Authorities say the cyclists were hit while riding along FM 455, a stretch of roadway frequently used by recreational riders. Both were transported to nearby hospitals, where they later died from their injuries.
Investigators say the driver involved initially left the scene but returned a short time later and has been cooperating with authorities. No charges have been announced as the investigation continues.
The crash has drawn renewed attention to cyclist safety on rural roads, where narrow lanes and higher speeds can create dangerous conditions for both riders and drivers. Officials have not released the identities of the cyclists pending notification of their families.
