The Texas Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit from 70 mph to 65 mph on Central Expressway from Mockingbird Lane to downtown, following a Dallas City Council resolution earlier this month.
The move comes after TxDOT speed studies recommended lower limits to improve safety on U.S. 75 and several other roadways.
Nine years ago, TxDOT raised the speed limit to alleviate congestion, but the area soon became one of the deadliest for pedestrians, both in Texas and nationwide, officials said. More than half of all crashes in Dallas last year occurred on city-operated roads, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In addition to U.S. 75, the speed limit on Ledbetter Drive from Interstate 35E to Bonnie View Road has been reduced to 40 mph.
