Thousands of people were outdoors Saturday evening at the City of DeSoto’s annual Crawfish Festival when a pop-up thunderstorm turned severe.
The rouge thunderstorm erupted during the festival while pounds and pounds of spicy boiled crawfish were being served.
For those worrying, Matt Smith, with the City of DeSoto, explained that the food didn’t go to waste.
“There was quite a bit of crawfish consumed,” Smith said. “Because we got about an hour and a half into the festival when this all happened, I don’t think too many crawfish died in vain.”
As for those in attendance, Smith said that they were “fortunate to have all our emergency personnel all in one place at one time.”
With 15 minutes of advance warning, event officials instructed everyone to go to their cars and shelter in place until the storm passed.
Due to the heavy rain, the festival’s evening concert with three-time Billboard charting artist Willie Clayton was canceled.
The last time the festival concert was canceled due to rain was in 2019, and Willie Clayton was scheduled to perform.
