Urgent calls to investigate what went wrong at the US Capitol

There are urgent calls to investigate what went wrong last week at the US Capitol.

Houston area Democratic Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher could hear the rioters trying to break into the chamber while she was on the House floor. "There was a vicious mob coming to attack the representatives of our democracy and we have got to address the gravity of this situation quickly and thoroughly."
"We were there for a long time while people beat on the doors. Those people were coming with weapons. They had guns, they had zip ties. Whether they wanted to take hostages, whether they wanted to kill people. We don't know the extent of what could have happened"

She is demanding answers on the security breaches during the attack and has joined with several colleagues to call on the Government Accountability Office to lead an investigation into the breach.

She says there are congressional committees beginning that work and have sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense.

The attack left five people dead including a Capitol Police officer who was reportedly struck in the head while facing off with the mob.  She's afraid this sort of thing could happen again.   "There was robust reporting that indicated that detailed preparations for seditious and violent confrontation were being made on social media for January 6, and there is no doubt that those violent confrontations are anticipated and are being called for in the days ahead"

Meanwhile, at least three House democrats have since tested positive for Covid-19.  Fletcher says that's because some House Republicans who refused to wear a mask when members of congress were put together in a room away from the mob.   "This isn't about political ideology.  This isn't about anything other than common courtesy, than putting other people ahead of yourselves and ensuring the health and safety and doing everything you can to help others."
