US, Mexico border restrictions extended

Land border travel restrictions between the US and Mexico have been extended another months until June 21st.

While US citizens are free to cross back and forth from Mexico, the border is closed for Mexican citizens and only open for essential travel. It's due to the pandemic.

The United States has an abundant supply of vaccine while Mexico does not.

Tony Payan, the Françoise and Edward Djerejian Fellow for Mexico Studies and director of the Center for the United States and Mexico at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.

He notes the travel mandate doesn't apply to air travel and thousands from Mexico are flying into Texas to get vaccinated. "Those people are spending nights in hotels, airfare, food, entertainment and all kinds of things. Let the people at the border do the same things. Cross over, shop, get a vaccine and continue on with their lives. It's good for the economy, it's good for the border, it's good for everyone."
