With two funeral homes in Uvalde hosting 21 funerals for the victims of the Robb Elementary School massacre, they're understandably overwhelmed.

They're getting a much-needed helping hand from people across the state and beyond.

Funeral directors, embalmers and others are donating their time to help Uvalde's two funeral homes manage the nearly two-dozen funerals over the next two weeks.

"We've been overwhelmed with funeral professionals from the State of Texas and multiple funeral associations from other states, including our national organization, said Jimmy Lucas, president of the Texas Funeral Directors Association.

Lucas is coordinating the volunteer effort, which is seeing morticians, embalmers, hearse drivers and others head to Uvalde.

"There's two coach drivers, one from East Texas and one from Fort Worth," Lucas said. "And that'll just be staggered out through the week."

The first of the 21 funerals were held Tuesday.

The funerals will continue through to the middle of this month.

"Whatever we can do to ease the burden, that's what we're doing," Lucas said.
