Friday's Veteran's Day ceremonies at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas begin at 11 a.m. to honor and celebrate those who have worn the nation's uniform.

The keynote speaker is US Army Brigadier General Steven P. Carpenter who is deputy commander of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood.

The ceremony will also feature the 1st Cavalry Division Band, the Midlothian High School Choir, the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base Color Guard, a flyover by the Air Force Reserves' 457th Squadron and the traditional rifle salute by Marine Aircraft Group-41.

Until 1947, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day and ceremonies were initiated following the First World War.

The date of November 11th was selected as a symbolic acknowledgement of the armistice that ended hostilities at 11 a.m. on November 11th in 1918 -- the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
