Once again violent crime is down in Dallas, and the police chief has the numbers to prove it.
Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia says when comparing 2022 to last year, there was a 13% reduction in violent crime, and of that, an 18% reduction in aggravated assaults.
"That equates to over 1,500 fewer victims of violent crime that we've had in the city," Garcia told NBC 5. "A lot of that is attributed to aggravated assault, which dropped 18%, which is roughly another 1,300 less victims of aggravated assault."
When it comes to murders, the numbers went up. Garcia explains most of the victims were criminals, and 7 out of 10 victims knew their killer.
As we delve into the murder, you know, we look at nearly over 70% of murder victims are involved in some sort of criminal activity or high-risk behavior," Garcia told NBC 5. "And so, we need to work on that. We need to obviously work with our community to get that message out that that is not the life we want. Over two-thirds of our murders occurred either inside a residence or at an apartment complex, which can be very challenging as well."
He credits the City with giving the funding for his programs to work, and the officers for sticking with his changes.
