DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The City of Dallas and volunteers handed out 300 turkeys Friday at a community center. The giveaway started at 11 a.m.; some people started pulling up outside West Dallas Multipurpose Center about 7.

"I'm feeling very blessed this Thanksgiving, and I really appreciate them giving out turkeys," one woman said.
"I feel very grateful, very grateful," another said. "It's amazing everyone in our community came together to help us out."
According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, turkeys cost an average of $1.50 a pound, 24% more than last year. The group says the average Thanksgiving dinner for ten people costs an average of $53.31, 14% more than last year.
One woman in line says she worked for one of the school districts in food service but was laid off when the district switched to remote learning. She says she served after-school meals, but the district has since switched those jobs to people who work in the building.
She says she knows companies are hiring, but at 59, she says she has been at a disadvantage.
"Nobody wants to hire me because I'm not a newbie," she says. "I've applied, believe me."
The Dallas Office of Community Care worked with the American Heart Association, Oak Cliff Veggie Project, Miles of Freedom and National Council of Jewish Women on the giveaway Friday morning.
