U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas) claimed victory Tuesday night in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, which would line up a general election contest against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

With 64% of precincts reporting, Allred had garnered 60% of the vote, while state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D-San Antonio) had 17%. A candidate must receive at least 50% to avoid a runoff.

In the Republican primary, Cruz was the projected winner, according to several media outlets.

Gutierrez has an office in Uvalde and has been pushing for the release of information on the Robb Elementary School shooting. Allred is a Congressman, attorney, and a former professional football player.

Other candidates in the race include Robert Hassan, a lawyer, former professional soccer player, and military veteran. He is from Katy and touts his ability to negotiate peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Mark Gonzalez is the former District Attorney for Nueces County, in the Corpus Christi area. He vowed not to prosecute any woman involved in an abortion case. Gonzalez resigned his seat to run for the Democratic nomination and the chance to run against Ted Cruz.

Thierry Tchenko is a hospital executive and not-for-profit volunteer from Houston. He says he has dedicated his life to helping others, serving in several election efforts.

Heil Rodriguez Prilliman  is from Fort Worth.  She says she is a progressive and a mother who has an entrepreneurial approach.

Steve Keough is a lawyer and retired veteran.  Keough served in the Navy, reaching the rank of Captain.  He currently lives in San Antonio where he teaches law at the St. Mary’s University School of Law.

Carl Sherman is from DeSoto.  He is a state representative serving in the southern portion of Dallas County.  He is a pastor

Meri Gomez is from Mission Texas.  She is a self-described entrepreneur who opened her own tax business.  She is an accountant.

If one of the candidates does not receive over 50 percent of the vote in the primary, the two contenders will face a runoff election.  The winner will run against Cruz in the general election.
