A Fort Worth family lost a beloved pet to a fire Friday that damaged their home and destroyed another one under construction next door in the Crestwood neighborhood of west Fort Worth.
At least two other homes were damaged by flames whipped up by strong south winds. Firefighters were originally sent to the scene on Edgefield Road because of the fire at the under-construction home. But by the time they were called, that home was already a total loss and the fire had quickly spread next door where a family of five lives.
Fire crews concentrated their efforts on that house, plus working on pop-up fires around the neighborhood where glowing embers were blown around by hot, dry winds gusting up to 20-30 mph.
Two other homes on the block were also damaged. The wind accelerated the intensity of the fires which took about an hour to knock down. The family got out OK, as did one of their pets. But the other one did not make it out alive.
