Winter storm took heavy toll on North Texas pool owners

Pool technician Tim Mott has seen a lot in nearly 40 years in the business, but nothing like this.

Mott said the combination of extreme cold temperatures and extended power outages during the recent winter storm dealt a knockout blow to a lot of pool equipment in North Texas.

He told KRLD he is also seeing structural damage to some pools, including decks that heaved and shifted as a result of the cold. In one case, he said the spa jets actually froze and burst.

Mott is urging area homeowners to be patient, as replacement equipment and materials are very scarce right now. He also advised affected pool owners to not ignore them while waiting for repairs, as stagnant water in pools can be a rampant breeding ground for insects, including mosquitoes.

In addition, he said pool damage may not be covered under many homeowners' insurance policies, so checking with your agent is advised. Mott talked with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
