The WNBA said a social media post showing Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers and Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese discussing a $400 bet on their teams’ matchup “missed the mark” and has been addressed internally.
The league posted the video Wednesday ahead of the Dream’s 82-81 win over the Wings in Arlington. The clip, captured during All-Star Weekend practice in Chicago, showed the two stars joking about the wager. Reese held up cash while outlining the terms, and Bueckers later confirmed she was “standing on that” when asked about it before tipoff.
The post was quickly deleted after circulating online. In a statement Thursday, the WNBA said: “While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league’s policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies. We recognized that the post missed the mark, removed it shortly after it was published, and addressed the matter internally.”

The league added it would use the moment to reemphasize to the players involved that even joking conversations about wagering on WNBA games can carry negative consequences.
Under the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement, any form of wagering on league competitions is strictly prohibited. Players found guilty of wagering, or attempting to wager, on the outcome or any aspect of a WNBA game face potential fines, suspensions or dismissal at the commissioner’s discretion.
A league source told multiple outlets that neither Bueckers nor Reese will face discipline. After the game, Reese referenced the bet in her postgame comments, saying she would be requesting Apple Pay.
The incident comes as the WNBA continues to grow in popularity and visibility. Both Bueckers and Reese are among the league’s most prominent young stars. The Wings and Dream are in the thick of the playoff race as the second half of the season unfolds.
