Women's football championship game coming to North Texas

The biggest weekend in women's football is happening in North Texas.

The Women's National Football Conference will crown their champion in the "IX Cup" on Saturday night at Apogee Stadium in Denton.

The 8-0 Texas Elite Spartans tangle with the 8-0 San Diego Rebellion.

"20 teams around the country have played for 12 weeks to get to this point," says Odessa Jenkins, head coach of the Spartans, and also CEO of the league.

But it's not just about the championship, it's a whole weekend celebrating women's football.

"We are really working to highlight and celebrate women and girls in sports," Jenkins says.

The weekend starts with the Girl's High School Flag Football Invitational and Fan Fest at the Sports Academy at the Star in Frisco on Friday starting at 6 p.m.

On Saturday morning in Grapevine, the WNFC Championship Breakfast will feature an award ceremony, and a panel of NFL greats like five time Super Bowl champion Charles Haley.

Later that day the 2nd annual WNFC All-Pro game will feature 100 of the top women’s football players in the country competing in 7-on-7 matchups, and a full 11-on-11 football game at Apogee stadium.

It all culminates in the WNFC IX Cup. The local Texas Elite team is aiming for their second title.

"We have athletes that have played professional basketball, soccer, other sports that have now transitioned to football. So it's high-level professional athletes," Jenkins says.

It's the kind of football that Texans and frankly folks all over America are used to seeing."
