Wylie East High School in Collin County is investigating how an outside group was on campus Monday handing out Qurans, hijabs and pamphlets without prior approval from the school district.
District officials said they first learned of the incident when videos showing the activity circulated on social media Monday night and acknowledged that required protocols for guest speakers and outside organizations were not followed.
The group, identified as Why Islam, set up a table in a common area during the lunch period offering religious materials and scarves that some students tried on, according to district leaders.
School administrators said they are reviewing procedures for approving outside groups and club activities to prevent unauthorized access in the future, and stressed that the matter is being treated as a procedural issue rather than a targeted religious effort.
Some community members have raised questions about the incident’s handling, pointing to a principal’s social media post last year showing her in a hijab during a school event, though district officials have not commented on that context.
The investigation remains ongoing as Wylie ISD works to clarify how the group was permitted on campus without advance notice.
The Wylie Independent School District provided NewsRadio 1080 KRLD with the following statement following Monday's incident:
“During the lunch period, four women representing the organization Why Islam were present on campus. We reviewed security footage — fewer than 50 students visited their table. Most students appeared to take a piece of candy, approximately four students received Henna designs, and about a dozen tried on a scarf or hijab. The table also included informational pamphlets and copies of the Quran. A few students voluntarily picked up materials, and the representatives provided Why Islam-branded bags for those who accepted the items…
“The organization did not have permission to distribute any materials on campus. Outside organizations are not permitted to distribute materials to students without prior approval from campus and district administration. Guests may speak only with official student clubs with prior approval and may address only students who have signed parent permission forms on file. In this case, the organization did not have permission to distribute materials, did not receive approval to speak with students outside of the club, and the club did not submit the required guest speaker request form.
“This situation is not about religion, politics, ideology, or any personal belief system. It is about a procedural breakdown. Mistakes were made, and we take full responsibility. We are actively addressing the lapses and reviewing our internal procedures and staff oversight related to student clubs and guest approvals to ensure incidents like this do not happen again.”
