The practice involves alternating one alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic beverage — such as water, a mocktail, sparkling water, or non-alcoholic beer — throughout the evening. The term comes from the black-and-white stripes of a zebra, creating a simple one-to-one pattern. Health experts and bartenders say the approach helps with hydration, reduces hangovers, slows the pace of drinking, and allows people to stay social without overindulging.

The trend has gained significant traction in 2025 and 2026, particularly among Gen Z and younger Millennials who want balance rather than full abstinence. Surveys show nearly half of on-premise drinkers already practice some form of zebra striping, boosted by the growing availability of high-quality non-alcoholic options at bars and restaurants across Dallas-Fort Worth. Local bartenders report more guests requesting mocktails between rounds, especially during events, happy hours, and sports gatherings.

Public health advocates note that zebra striping aligns with broader efforts to promote responsible drinking. It can lower risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, such as impaired driving and dehydration, while helping people maintain control in social settings. Bars in Deep Ellum, Uptown, and the Stockyards have expanded non-alcoholic menus to accommodate the shift.

While not a new idea — people have long mixed water with cocktails — the catchy name and improved non-alcoholic products have brought renewed attention to the strategy.
