President Joe Biden turns 81 years old next month, and while he maintains that he can serve another term as president, an overwhelming majority of Americans think he is “too old” to run for re-election.
A new poll from Monmouth University found just that, with a majority of Democrats and Republicans finding the president's age a problem. The poll also follows several other surveys that have found the same belief among Americans.
In September, a poll from the Wall Street Journal found that 73% of voters thought Biden was too old to run for re-election.
In August, a poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs found that 77% of voters, including 89% of Republicans and 69% of Democrats, thought Biden was too old to be effective for another four years.
Adding to this, the Monmouth poll found that 76% of Americans think Biden is too old, including 90% of Republicans and 56% of Democrats.
However, Biden isn’t the only elderly American running for a second term in 2024, as former President Donald Trump is also getting close to 80, at 77 years old.
However, when it comes to how Americans view Trump, the Monmouth survey found that only 48% said he was too hold to run in 2024, including 64% of Democrats and 23% of Republicans.
“These two men were born only three and a half years apart, but public perceptions of their age are wildly different. This is certainly one of the reasons, but probably not the only reason, why there is little voter enthusiasm for seeing a rematch of 2020 except among partisan loyalists,” Patrick Murray, the director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, shared in a statement.
The possibility of Trump and Biden facing off again in 2024 isn’t leaving anyone pleased, as 37% of respondents were enthusiastic about Trump being the Republican nominee, and 32% were enthusiastic about Biden being the Democratic nominee.
Still, there hasn’t been a sign from either party that a change is coming.
Biden has attempted to address concerns, saying last month at a Labor Day speech that he was more than capable of serving another four years.
“The only thing that comes with age is a little wisdom,” he said. “I’ve been doing this longer than anybody, and guess what, I’m going to continue to do it with your help.”
