AAA urges preparation for Christmas trips & shopping

The AAA estimates 3.6 million Texans traveled over Thanksgiving weekend, and with millions more planning trips for holiday shopping or Christmas vacations, the organization is urging people to plan ahead.

"In the winter storm in February, we saw how quick the weather can change, and how cold it can get even here in Texas," says AAA's Daniel Armbruster. "It's important to always be prepared for any conditions. You don't want to wait to do that. You want to do it now so when the emergency happens, you're already prepared, and you don't have to think about that."

Armbruster urges people going on road trips to ensure they have a flashlight with batteries and a fully charged cell phone before leaving home. He says people should also ensure they have tools, jumper cables and a first aid kit in the car. Armbruster says people should also consider bringing kitty litter to provide traction in an icy area.

In addition, Armbruster says people should pack reflective clothing and triangles in the car.

"Certainly, you want to be visible if you're in a roadside emergency so other motorists can see you on the roadside and you're not struck," he says. "But you want to try to stay in your vehicle."

Armbruster says people taking long trips should also keep a blanket and warm clothing in the car.

"Also, think about your passengers, think about water and food," he says. "If you're in a remote area, it could be a while as you wait for help."

In addition to preparation for road trips, AAA says 20% of all crashes occur in parking lots. The organization says those crashes "often lead to expensive insurance claims for vehicle damage or tragic injuries if you strike a pedestrian."

AAA released a list a recommendations to avoid a crash in a parking lot:
Be aware of the hazards around you in a parking lot, including pedestrians and moving vehicles

Don't Drive Intoxticated. While searching for a parking spot, don't make or take phone calls, read or send texts and emails, use social media or take photos or videos

Drive slowly and obey all traffic and directional signs

Avoid shortcuts such as cutting across parking lanes and rows of parking spots

Watch for pedestrians and other vehicles when slowly backing up

Be extra alert for small children, pets, and parents pushing baby strollers in parking lots

Turn on your headlights, even in the daylight and especially when driving through dark parking garages

To protect your car, AAA says shoppers should always make sure their car is locked with windows closed, avoid leaving purchases visible inside and park in well-lit areas.

AAA Texas says the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas leads to more insurance claims than any other time of year.
