Study: Almost a million deaths blamed on opioid overdoses between 1999-2020

A new study has revealed that almost a million deaths due to opioid overdose have occurred in the U.S. over the past 20 years.

The study from the National Center for Health Statistics, which is a division of the CDC, shows that 932,364 people died from opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2020.

Adding to that, data from the CDC shows that another 100,000 deaths are expected to be reported for 2021.

The study goes also states that: "In 2020, 91,799 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States for an age-adjusted rate of 28.3 per 100,000 standard population. The rate in 2020 (28.3) was 31% higher than the rate in 2019 (21.6)."
