(WWJ) -- Amazon Sidewalk will allow customers to share their internet connections from their home devices, but those who don't wish to be a part of the program only have a few days left to opt out.
The feature is intended to help all users maintain better connectivity by utilizing a shared network that permits devices such as Amazon Alexa, Echo, Ring and others pickup another internet connection if the home's signal is weak. It basically taps into nearby wifi networks when your own signal gets weak -- which means neighbors will potentially be donating their wifi.
“Operated by Amazon—with no charge to customers—Sidewalk helps simplify new device setup, extends the working range of low-bandwidth devices, and helps devices stay online, even if they are outside the range of the user’s home wifi,” Amazon wrote in a statement.
Sidewalk, which is only being offered in the U.S., will automatically enroll customers on June 8.
Those who do not wish to share their internet signal can do the following to opt out of the program:
-Open the Alexa app
-Open “More”
-Select “Settings”
-Select “Account Settings”
-Select “Amazon Sidewalk”
-Turn Sidewalk On or Off for your account
