More than ever before, Americans are choosing to give their newborn babies gender-neutral names. Those are the findings in a new study by Names.org, a site that tracks trends in baby names.
In their 2023 analysis, the site’s report showed that just under 17% of baby names were gender-neutral last year. That’s up from just over 6% in 1980.
“I think it’s part of a broader trend of Americans looking for more unique names,” Matthew Kolb, chief technical officer of Names.org, told USA Today.
“Especially during the 90s, we saw gender-neutral names rise in popularity,” Kolb said, which in turn led to “a more dramatic rise in the popularity” of outside-the-box monikers.
Logan was the top gender-neutral name in 2023, and currently sits in third place this year behind Dylan and Avery.
Names.org claims to have a success rate of 95% when it comes to predicting the most popular baby names. They define gender-neutral names as names give to both genders at least 5% of the time.
