For years, millennials have been accused of killing chain restaurants. Now, it looks like they might be bringing them back.

This week, the “Something Offbeat” podcast takes a look at Applebee’s internet-breaking” date night pass – offering 52 meals for just $200 – and how it fits in to the chain restaurant resurgence.

Eater’s Amy McCarthy has had her eye on the trend since October. She joined the show to explore why more people are heading to spots like Olive Garden and Quizno’s lately.

“I think there are a number of factors that are influencing the comeback of chains or even places that hadn’t been chains before becoming chains, what we would call chain-ification,” she said.

Listen in to find out what those factors are and what we can expect from chain restaurants in the future.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
