
Officials at the University of North Carolina have warned the campus that there may be an armed and dangerous person on or near the Chapel Hill Campus.
The school sent an alert to students at 1:03 p.m. EST warning of the potential threat, and at 2:24 p.m. EST, it sent another saying that the situation was “ongoing” and that the person was “at large.”
Campus police shared a photo of the “person of interest,” saying anyone who recognizes the man should call the authorities.
Video shared on social media shows local law enforcement responding to the campus as a helicopter flies overhead.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) shared on X that he had spoken with the Orange County Sheriff, Charles Blackwood, and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety secretary, Eddie M. Buffaloe Jr.
Cooper shared that “all state resources needed to capture the shooter and protect the UNC campus” will be shared.
Officials have not yet shared if anyone was killed or injured in the incident.
