A swarm of bees on the turbine of an American Airlines plane caused an approximately one-hour delay for passengers preparing to leave Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Sunday.

The incident occurred as the flight, headed to San Francisco, sat on the tarmac at the busy North Carolina airport. Passenger Micah McCollough recorded video from inside the cabin showing beekeepers and airline employees carefully removing the swarm from the aircraft's engine area. The workers placed the bees into a box for safe relocation away from the plane.

Once the bees were cleared, the plane pushed back and departed roughly one hour behind schedule. There were no reports of injuries or damage to the aircraft.

Airlines and airports take wildlife encounters seriously for safety reasons. Professional beekeepers are routinely called in these situations to humanely remove swarms rather than destroy them, balancing passenger safety with environmental concerns.

McCollough shared video of the bee rescue on Instagram, giving fellow passengers and online viewers a close-up look at the unusual delay as it unfolded right outside the windows.

The event is a reminder that even at major hubs like Charlotte Douglas, unexpected natural occurrences can temporarily disrupt flight operations. Such incidents, while uncommon, are typically resolved quickly when handled by trained professionals.
