This summer, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) asked the Food and Drug Administration to look into an energy drink called Prime, which has 200 milligrams of caffeine per can.
Schumer said the drink, developed in part by popular YouTuber Logan Paul, was marketed to children. What is a safe level of caffeine for kids? What about adults? The team at “Something Offbeat” decided to find out.
Host Mike Rogers spoke to Amy Goodson, a Dallas-based registered dietitian, about the amount of caffeine we consume and what causes us to feel so sluggish.
“These energy drinks are multiplying the amount of caffeine that you're taking in. And I’m not sure that most consumers actually realize that,” Goodson said. “I’m not sure that they realize that they’re drinking two to three times the amount of caffeine that they’re consuming... [in] a cup of coffee.”
