HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Experts are looking more closely at the alleged Highland Park shooter’s gun collection, with some of the weapons purchased after his father signed off on his Firearm Owners ID Card application.
Lake County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chief Chris Covelli, spokesman for the Major Crimes Task Force, detailed part of the collection after Robert Crimo made his bond court appearance on Wednesday.
In 2020, Crimo purchased a Kel-Tec Sub2000. That type of gun is a folding carbine that can fit into a backpack.
“Quick to, deploy in situations where time is of the essence” according to the Keltec website.
That was the weapon that, police said, Crimo had in his mother’s car, in Madison, hours after the parade shooting, when it's alleged he was “seriously contemplating” another mass shooting.
The weapon used on the rooftop was a Smith & Wesson semi automatic M&P15 rifle, described as an AR-15 style weapon.
In 2019, when Crimo Police were called to the family home because he had threatened to 'kill everyone,' officers confiscated 16 knives, a dagger and a sword and then reported the incident to the Illinois State Police, Covelli said.
Crimo was still able to get a gun permit four months later because no one, including his family, wanted to move forward with the complaint, Axios reported. His father co-sponsored the gun application.
