During a news conference last Friday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hinted further at a potential 2024 presidential campaign following the conclusion of his state’s 60-day legislative session.
“We’ll get on that relatively soon. You either got to put up or shut up about that,” DeSantis said when asked during the press conference.
Even though the Florida Republican has held off from engaging in talks concerning the 2024 presidential election, DeSantis remains a top opponent of former President Donald Trump.
If he were to launch a campaign, he would have some ground to cover from the start, as recent polls show that he is behind Trump substantially. A CBS News survey shows Desantis trailing among likely Republican primary voters 24% to Trump’s 59%.
With Trump having announced his campaign a week after the 2022 midterms, many have been waiting and speculating when DeSantis would throw his hat in the ring.
Early June to late May now seems to be the window for DeSantis to officially enter the mix, as those close to the governor have said for months he would decide either way when the state’s legislative session came to a close, CBS News reported.
On Saturday, DeSantis continued to test the waters, speaking at an event in central Wisconsin. During the event, he discussed his efforts in Florida, noting that he has “only begun to fight” woke ideology but that his state was an example of winning that fight.
“I come bearing good news, and you may say, ‘What good news is there?’ Republicans have had a series of disappointing election results, not just here in Wisconsin, but really across the country,” DeSantis said. “So, what’s the good news? The good news is the State of Florida and what we’ve achieved shows Republicans can win again.”
The Florida Republican also discussed his beliefs that politics isn’t about “building a brand” or “virtue signaling” on social media.
“Ultimately politics is about winning and producing results for the people you represent,” DeSantis said.
While some, including those in his party, have criticized him for taking his time in announcing his campaign, DeSantis told reporters Friday that it was only “chatter” and that it’s “just not something that I worry about.”
