A Maine woman is recovering from injuries she received when an escaped cow attacked her.
The unidentified 43-year-old was preparing to start jogging in Farmington, about 75 miles north of Portland, on Friday afternoon when she was confronted by the bovine, which had escaped from a farm a short time earlier, according to the Farmington Police Department.
"She was lifted off the ground by the animal's horns, but was able to escape into the nearby tree line," police said in a statement.
The woman suffered a laceration that required stitches.
The attack happened along the Whistle Stop Rail-Trail, a popular destination for mountain bikers, hikers, dog walkers and horseback riders.
The cow and a large pig that also escaped were captured and returned to their owner, who may be held criminally responsible for the attack.
The case has been turned over to the District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether the owner should be charged in the incident, according to police.
