October is here. Here are some of the holiday-related stats that you may not have heard yet.
2024 Budget
For some reason, we're not quite as enthusiastic about Halloween this year.
The National Retail Federation says overall spending on the holiday will be over $12.2 billion. But, that's down 5% from last year's total. We'll drop about $3.5 billion on Halloween candy alone.
Candy
For the first time in years, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups aren't America's favorite Halloween candy this year. CandyStore.com looks at the most popular candies in all 50 states before the holiday. M&M's are the new king, mostly because there are a variety of flavors. In Texas, the favorite Halloween candy is Sour Patch Kids. That candy is now the third most popular. And yes, candy corn is still in the top 10, it jumped to seventh place this year.
Movies
Halloween always brings horror movies to the TV for the entire month of October. That's still an extremely popular form of entertainment. Two-thirds of Americans say they loved scary movies as a kid, and 73% say they still love them. The average person says they saw their first horror film before the age of 11. And most people say they saw their first one at a slumber party at someone else's house. Americans will also sit through an average of five of them before the end of Halloween. A quarter will watch 10 or more.
