Criminal charges against actor Alec Baldwin in the case of the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on a movie set have been dropped.
Baldwin had been facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Halyna Hutchins in October 2021.
Hutchins was shot by a prop weapon fired by Baldwin while shooting a film called “Rust” in New Mexico. The movie’s director Joel Souza was also shot in the incident but survived.
However, prosecutors say Baldwin is not completely off the hook and that the investigation is still ongoing in light of new information they have learned.
“We therefore will be dismissing the involuntary manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin to conduct further investigation,” special prosecutors Kari T. Morrissey and Jason J. Lewis wrote in a statement. “This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled. Our follow-up investigation will remain active and on-going.”
The film’s weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is still facing involuntary manslaughter. She has pled not guilty.
Filming on the movie resumed this week in Montana for the first time since the incident, ending a 16-month hiatus on the project.
