Vice President JD Vance has installed a custom chicken coop at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., along with a dozen baby chicks, bringing a touch of backyard farming to the official second family residence.
The Victorian-style coop, designed to match the historic architecture of the vice president’s home, features a round turret and faux slate roof. It was built and donated by Carolina Coops, a family-owned small business based in North Carolina that has been handcrafting premium coops for 18 years. The project came at no cost to taxpayers.
A spokesperson confirmed Vance will personally tend to the chickens, and his children have already named the chicks. The family is expected to enjoy fresh eggs from the new flock. The coop was installed on the grounds of the 72-acre Naval Observatory, which complies with local regulations for keeping chickens.

The addition highlights Vance’s interest in self-sufficiency and support for American small businesses. Carolina Coops owner Matt DuBoise described seeing the company’s work at such a prominent location as a career milestone. The story has drawn widespread attention online, with many praising the family-friendly and practical touch at the vice presidential residence. No injuries or other incidents have been reported.
