More than 1,000 new cases of Mpox were reported in Congo last week, health officials say.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global public health emergency over the outbreak, with more than 18,000 cases and 500 deaths reported worldwide.

African officials say vaccines are desperately needed to fight back the outbreak.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is spread by close skin-to-skin contact including sexual intercourse. The current Mpox strain is much more transmissible than previous strains from a 2022 outbreak.
