As Kerr County’s 60‑mile grid search continues along the Guadalupe River in the wake of the July 4 flash floods, rescuers are working to recover victims in what has become a tragic showdown with nature. In Texas, at least 110 lives have been lost and around 180 people remain missing.

Simultaneously, Tropical Storm Chantal, which made landfall in South Carolina on July 6, has triggered historic flooding across the Carolinas. Heavy rainfall—up to 14 inches in parts of central North Carolina—have led to dozens of water rescues, states of emergency in Chapel Hill and surrounding counties, and at least five confirmed fatalities.

In the high‑desert landscape of southern New Mexico, torrential monsoon rains have unleashed catastrophic flash floods in the mountain resort town of Ruidoso. Rivers rose 15–20 feet within hours - prompting nearly 100 swift-water rescues, sweeping away homes and vehicles, and leaving at least three people missing.

What Comes Next

Texas: Grid search continues in hopes of finding more bodies; communities search for closure.

Carolinas: Flood-weary areas brace for more rain as Chantal’s remnants head north into Virginia and the Mid‑Atlantic.

New Mexico: Recovery efforts shift from rescues to damage assessment and community support in flood-battered regions.
