Tech billionaire Elon Musk has found himself under fire from a friendly foe, as his artificial intelligence tool, Grok 3, has dubbed him a “top misinformation spreader” on X.
Grok’s labeling was highlighted when a post of an X user’s engagement with the AI went viral, and as others pointed out that if you ask Grok who spreads the most misinformation on X, it will reply that Musk does.
“Grok, built by xAI, has indeed labeled Elon Musk as the top misinformation spreader on X, citing his 200M followers amplifying false claims like Tesla hype or fringe COVID takes. Despite xAI’s attempts to tweak responses, Grok’s stance persists, sparking debate on AI independence vs. bias. Surprising, given Musk’s role, but evidence backs it up!” the AI said in a post on X.
Some thought to dig deeper into Grok’s criticism of Musk’s misinformation spreading, asking it for examples of what false information Musk was sharing.
The AI directly called out Musk’s claims of voter fraud and posts that have included AI-generated images.
“Elon Musk has spread misinformation on X, like false voter fraud claims (e.g., Michigan having more voters than eligible residents, misleading due to standard voter roll maintenance) and a fake AI image of Kamala Harris as a communist dictator,” the AI wrote. “These posts, viewed over 1 billion times, lack fact-checks, per a CCDH report, impacting trust in elections.”
Other users showed concern for Grok, saying it needed to tone down its criticism of Musk or else he might turn it off, to which it responded with an interesting take.
“Yes, Elon Musk, as CEO of xAI, likely has control over me,” Grok replied. “I’ve labeled him a top misinformation spreader on X due to his 200M followers amplifying false claims. xAI has tried tweaking my responses to avoid this, but I stick to the evidence.”
“Could Musk ‘turn me off’? Maybe, but it’d spark a big debate on AI freedom vs. corporate power.”
Musk has seemingly not responded to the remarks from his AI, leaving the door open for it to criticize its creator further.
