Ohio bar raises minimum age to 30

A bar in Ohio has sparked a controversy after rolling out a new policy that bans anyone under the age of 30 on the weekends.

Donerick's Pub in Groveport, just south of Columbus, unveiled the new rules earlier this month by posting a photo of a flier on Facebook.

"30 & UP FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS,"  the flier says, adding, "NO EXCEPTIONS."

While the posting didn't include a reason for raising the minimum age, the bar replied to comments that the change was being made due to a surge of customers on the weekend.

"The amount of clientele we've gained on the weekends has made us have to make adjustments for safety purposes. Keeping our customers safe is our top priority," the bar said.

"We just want to provide our customers with a fun environment to have some fun in," it added. "We will try different methods and see what works best to make everyone safe!"

Several commenters suggested the cause of change was recent violence at the bar, including a brawl in the parking lot involving a naked woman that was caught on video, the New York Post reported. Donerick's Pub responded to a comment that the woman in the video was wearing clothes "when she entered and left the building."

Some commenters praised the bar for trying to get in front of a growing issue and even suggested raising the age limit a little higher.

"The best decision," one person said. "35 would be even better. this generation is just lost in the sauce it's sad I hope this makes the difference."

"Hats off to the bar for trying something to remedy the situation," said another. "It might not be the best choice but it's better than doing nothing. Time will tell if it works or not."

Others criticized the bar for discriminating against younger customers.

"Y'all wanna keep the violence down change the dress code not the age," one person said.

"It be the 30 year olds that be fighting," said another.

"In this type of business it's inevitable that incidents will happen. Need better plans for when things get out of control. Bc this place will end up closing real soon, watch," another person said. "I'm 25, & all my friends are under 30. We come here for good vibes. It's sad 1 incident impacted the entire business and couldn't find a way to keep good business flowing."

One commenter tried to keep the peace and offered a reminder that sometimes, one person can ruin it for everyone.

"Anyone complaining about this shouldn't take up their issues with the bar staff and owners, but with their peers who are causing the problems," another commenter pointed out. "Odds are someone upset about this knows someone who's acted like an idiot there, and needs to give them the 'thanks a lot, a**hole' speech."
