Although some Christian leaders moved to distance themselves from former President Donald Trump after a disappointing midterms season for the GOP, one group has already pledged support for his recently-announced 2024 presidential campaign.
In a press release, the group Pastors for Trump announced that it is “aiming to galvanize support in the evangelical community for President Trump as he seeks to return to the White House as Commander-in-Chief in 2024.”
According to reports in HuffPost and The Washington Post, high-profile Evangelical Trump supporters Mike Evans and Robert Jeffress said they would not jump to support Trump’s new campaign. However, Pastors for Trump leader Jackson Lahmeyer of Sheridan Church in Tulsa, Okla., still believes in the former president.
“President Trump made it clear during his 2016 campaign for President of the United States that he was committed to bringing Christian leaders into the fold,” Lahmeyer said. “During his historic first term, he proved that he would deliver on the promises he made. Heading into 2024, it is more important now than ever to reaffirm the strength of the Christian faith and our willingness to support President Trump in his fight to return to the Oval Office.”
Lahmeyer ran for a Senate seat in Oklahoma and was endorsed by Trump associates Roger Stone, Rudy Giuliani, John Paul Mac Isaac and Sebastian Gorka, per Pastors for Trump press release. He lost to Sen. James Lankford in the June Republican primary election and Lankford went on to win the midterm election in November.
Trump and some of his associates, including Stone, have been embroiled in legal trouble since Trump’s single term in office from 2016 through 2020.
According to the organization website, “Pastors for Trump is a coalition of Patriot Pastors from all 50 states that recognize the importance of Christians engaging in the world we live in as the salt and light,” and support Trump. The group plans to present requests before Trump “on issues such as life, marriage, freedom of speech and personal responsibility.”
In addition to Lahmeyer, Pastor Craig Hagan – co-Pastor of Rhema Bible Church and CEO for Keith Hagin Ministries – and South Carolina-based Christian NOW Television Network CEO Mark Burns have joined the coalition.
The group holds a monthly prayer call and daily prayer requests. They are also looking for more pastors to join their project.
