The World Health Organization says almost a quarter a million people die in accidental drownings every year. It's the third leading cause of accidental deaths.
There's one way to prevent those numbers from growing even larger.
A new Gallup Poll finds a majority of people around the world cannot swim. 55% of people over the age of 15 would not be able to handle themselves in the water without help. Most of those people are women.
That number jumps to 72% in what are considered "low-income countries". In first-world countries, a quarter of the population can't swim.
