The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli.
The raw ground beef items were produced on March 28, 2024, and have a packaging date of “032824” and a use/freeze date of April 22, 2024, the public health alert shared. The affected products also have an establishment number of “EST. 960A.”
A recall for the items has not been issued as they are no longer available for purchase, the FSIS shared. Still, health officials say that anyone who has purchased the beef should not conserve or serve it but instead return it for a refund or throw it away.
The problem was discovered by Greater Omaha Packing Co. while it was conducting an inventory of its product, as some of it was on hold for testing positive for E. coli, the FSIS shared.
Greater Omaha Packing Co. notified the FSIS that it had “inadvertently used a portion of the contaminated beef to produce ground beef products that they subsequently shipped into commerce.”
The health alert has the full list of products affected by the health alert on the FSIS’s website here.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of illness caused by consumption of the products.
Those concerned about potentially falling ill are advised to contact their healthcare provider.
