The US Supreme Court heard about two hours of arguments in a case of gender affirmation that could reach into Texas, Wednesday.

The US Justice Department is arguing that banning gender-affirming medical treatment for teens could be medically harmful. US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prolegar told Justice Samual Alito there are studies that show teens who do not get treatment under a doctor's care could be at increased risk of harming themselves.

The lawsuit involves the state of Tennessee, which is defending its ban on transgender care and they have support from across the country. Jonathan Saenz with the group "Texas Values" says the case could have a nationwide impact.

"We don't want the Supreme Court to do anything that could negatively impact our state law," Saenz argues.

About two dozen states, including Texas, have laws that are similar to the one in Tennessee.

No matter the outcome of the case, President-elect Trump has vowed to restrict transgender treatments for kids once he's in office.
