Last month, a medical story of a pig organ transplant went viral. The family of a deceased New York man donated his body for research. Scientists replaced his kidneys with one from a genetically modified pig on July 14 and announced details of the experiment in August.

Soon, the pig kidney began to function while inside the man's body. Thursday, we learned it continued to do so for two months. That is the longest, successful pig organ transplant in a human's body that scientists have recorded thus far.

Texas Health Transplant Specialists surgeon Dr. Eric Siskind joined the KRLD Afternoon News on Thursday. He personally knows the doctor who led the successful procedure and spoke with Kristin Diaz and David Rancken about whether or not animal organs are the future for human organ transplant needs.
